Tax time is here again - and while it might not be your favourite time of year, getting your Personal Tax Return for FY25 sorted doesn’t have to be a headache. Whether you’re on a salary, running your own gig, or juggling investments, knowing when to lodge is key to keeping the ATO happy and your stress levels low.

Don’t Jump the Gun with your Personal Tax Return for FY25
We get it - f you’re due a refund, it’s tempting to lodge as early as possible. But lodging too soon can actually cause more hassle than it’s worth.
The ATO needs a bit of time to pull together your pre-filled data (like income, bank interest, and dividends).
If you lodge before the pre-fill info is complete, you might have to fix your return later - extra admin no one wants!
Key Tax Dates to Keep in Mind
Here’s what your FY25 tax timeline looks like:
1 July 2025 – You can start preparing your return.
Late July 2025 – ATO pre-fill data should be mostly complete.
31 October 2025 – Deadline for self-lodgers.
May 2026 – If you’re a Future Accounting client, you will qualify for an extended deadline.
The Sweet Spot for Lodging
If you’re keen to get it done early, hold off just a little. Mid to late July is usually the sweet spot - it gives the ATO enough time to finalise your data, meaning fewer mistakes and less chance of needing to amend your return.
Got managed investment funds? You’ll need to wait a bit longer. Those annual tax statements usually drop around September, so lodging before then could mean missing info and more paperwork down the line.
Should You Lodge Early or Hold Off?
Good reasons to lodge early:
You’re owed a refund and want it ASAP.
Your tax is pretty straightforward.
You’ve got all your paperwork ready to go.
Reasons to wait a little longer:
You’re still waiting on documents (like fund or employer statements).
Your return includes some trickier deductions.
You’d rather let your accountant handle it a bit later in the lodgement window.
Avoiding ATO Penalties
If you’re lodging on your own, make sure you submit by 31 October 2025. Miss the deadline and you could cop a Failure to Lodge on Time penalty, which adds up the longer you leave it.
The good news? If you're on our tax agent list, you could get until May 2026 to lodge - so get in touch and we’ll take care of the rest.
