The Best Regional Businesses Aren't Waiting for Distance to Stop Them

Digital technology is allowing regional businesses to solve problems differently - and the 2026 Innovate with nbn Grants Program is backing some of the best ideas.

Regional businesses regularly solve problems metropolitan businesses do not have. Customers are further away. Specialist staff are harder to recruit. Travel takes longer. Markets can be smaller. Access to health, education, suppliers or technical expertise can be limited.

That makes digital technology more than convenience. It can become the operating model.

The 2026 Innovate with nbn Grants Program is offering a total prize pool of $125,000 to regional and remote businesses and organisations using digital technology and nbn connectivity to solve real problems. Seven category winners receive $15,000, with one overall champion receiving an additional $20,000. Applications close 12 October 2026.

The grant is not really about buying technology

The strongest applications are not likely to be 'we would like a new computer'. nbn says successful ideas demonstrate genuine innovation, clear impact, an authentic local story and effective use of digital connectivity.

That is an important commercial lesson even for businesses that never apply for the grant.

Start with the problem, not the technology.

What problem are you solving?

A farmer may need to monitor water remotely because properties are spread across large distances. A regional health provider may use telehealth because specialists are not local. A tourism business may use digital experiences to extend reach beyond people physically driving past the front door.

Technology becomes valuable when it removes a real constraint.

Categories for Regional Businesses

  • Education

  • First Nations Business

  • Women in Regional Business

What makes a stronger application?

  1. Explain the problem in plain English.

  2. Show exactly how the digital solution changes the outcome.

  3. Use evidence - time saved, people reached, cost reduced, production increased or access improved.

  4. Explain why the problem matters specifically in a regional or remote setting.

  5. Show what the grant would unlock rather than simply what it would buy.

Innovation does not need to mean inventing AI

A regional business can be innovative by using existing technology in a better way. Automation, remote monitoring, online service delivery, digital booking, sensor data, AI, e-commerce or connected equipment can all matter if they produce a genuine improvement.

Think beyond the grant

The best reason to document an innovation project is not the possibility of winning $15,000. It is that the exercise forces the owner to define the commercial case: what is the problem, what does it cost today, what changes, and how will we know the project worked?

The 4P's lens

People - Use technology to improve access, reduce isolation and make work easier for customers and staff.

Preserve - Save time, travel and operating cost where distance creates waste.

Protect - Build reliable systems and connectivity without losing control of data and cyber risk.

Prosper - Turn regional constraints into differentiated products, services and scalable opportunities.

The regional advantage

Regional businesses often know their problems more intimately because they live with them every day. That can be a source of innovation, not simply disadvantage.

The best idea may already be hiding inside the workaround your business created because the normal way did not work where you live.

If that workaround uses digital connectivity and creates measurable impact, it may be worth turning into a proper innovation project - grant or no grant.
